The Curry Comb – The Unsung Hero of a Shiny Coat

Grooming your horse to a radiant shine is easier than most owners think. Many grooming totes are stuffed with a dizzying array of brushes—yet the most essential tool is often overlooked.

Ask any professional groom, and you’ll find this tool in every kit—no matter how streamlined:

Enter the CURRY COMB.

Now, before you say, “I’ve got one!”—let’s talk types. Is it a stiff, prickly plastic curry? A metal one? A soft rubber curry?

  • Hard, prickly plastic curries: Skip them altogether—they’re too abrasive, can cause micro-cuts and serve little purpose.
  • Soft rubber, high-quality synthetic and metal curries: Each has its place, used intentionally and with care.

Which Curry Comb Do You Need?

For massaging and loosening debris:
Your first step in our 4-step grooming process starts with a gentle, circular massage over the horse’s entire body—head to tail.

  • We recommend a softer rubber curry, like the Haas New Generation or the Epona curry for sensitive horses. These stimulate blood flow, lift dirt and dander, and feel downright luxurious to your horse.

For crusty mud and brush-cleaning:
Keep a stiff curry on hand—preferably one made from non-static synthetic material or rounded metal teeth. We love the Haas "Der Gute" but a non-scratchy metal curry will also be fine.

  • Its job? Dislodge dried mud and clean your brush between strokes. Also for a more vigorous massage on muscled areas like glutes or neck.
  • For cleaning your brushes between strokes, use this rhythm: 3 strokes with your body brush ➜ 1 stroke against the curry ➜ tap curry on the floor or wall to shake out debris.

Why Currying Matters

"Currying" isn’t just about cleaning—it’s about connecting. It invigorates the skin, promotes healthy hair growth, and primes your horse for the brushes that follow.
